The First World War was the first time that pistols and rifles would be the primary line of defense for soldiers in a war setting. Before this, mortars and grenades were much more widely used, just as they were by the opposition in the Vietnam War.
Interestingly enough, one of my favorites of the Second World War is what is considered by many to be the world’s first assault rifle. The StG44 was developed and used by Germans and was a first in that it (for the first time) combined the features of the automatic rifle and submachine gun.
S Dent says that he most widely used American pistol during WWII was a Browning pistol. By design, this semi-automatic handgun was the first line of defense for our boys “over there.”
The S Dent Gun site would like to acknowledge that while it does not support what the Axis powers did during WWII, some of their firearms were outstanding pieces of German ingenuity. Some other S Dent top picks for this war era are the Beretta Modello 1934 (Italian military), the 9mm Browning HP, initially used by Germans and later used by the Allies, and the Smith & Wesson 0.38/200, British ordered and designed and made in the US for the allies. S Dent recognizes that there are many other terrific firearms of this period…these are just the top picks based on my personal knowledge.
